Tracks:
    This opossum usually shows 5 toes in both the front and hind tracks.  The toes of the front foot are widely splayed in almost a star shape.  The hind track shows a large thumb with no claw pointing out 90º from the other 4 toes which are tightly clustered together.  The hind track is usually placed just behind the front track from the same side of the body when walking or trotting.
 
Similar tracks:
    Other opossums may leave similar tracks.  We are not yet sure how to tell these tracks from the Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) in in parts of Central America where their ranges overlap.  The Virginia opossum may have slightly larger tracks and other opossums may have smaller tracks.
